Riya Duddi

Bharatnatyam

Bharatnatyam, which originates from the state of Tamil Nadu in South India, is one of India's most popular dance styles. A popular interpretation of the name of the style is: BHAVA (expression) + RAGA (musical mode) + TALA (rhythm) + NATYAM (dance).

Bharatnatyam combines artistic expression with a sense of spirituality. Dancers perform with precise hand gestures, intricate footwork, vivid facial expression, and fluid movements. The roots of this style can be traced back to the Dasi Attam dance traditions of South India in the 17th century as part of the temple worship.
